A Salt Lake City correctional officer was killed earlier today after an inmate overpowered the guard while being transported to an area hospital for a medical appointment.
Stephen Anderson, a 22-year veteran of the Department of Corrections was shot in the head after inmate Curtis Allgier overpowered the 60-year-old guard while at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center. The 27-year-old convict who was in prison on a parole violation then fled the hospital grounds and carjacked a Ford Explorer.
The vehicle was spotted by police at which time Anderson led officers on a high-speed chase that ended after the SUV ran over a spike strip. Allgier ran into a nearby Arby’s restaurant and assaulted the manager.
Police were able to apprehend Allgier inside the manager’s office. He was unarmed at the time he was captured.
