On September 14-16, it’s time for the Mickelson Trail Trek. Laid through the Black Hills – and some say still haunted by the ghosts of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane -- the Mickelson Trail is gentle enough for all ages to trek, yet features more than 100 converted railroad bridges and four hard rock tunnels. 109 miles in length – although you don’t have to walk all of them! – the Mickelson Trail follows the abandoned Deadwood to Edgemont Burlington Northern Rail Line. It’s a true walk through nature and history.
Two weeks later, from September 29th through October first, it’s time for the Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival at Custer State Park. For Wild West fans, this is a chance to see park rangers saddle up and drive the park’s 1,450 bison into the buffalo corrals. All receive a medical checkup, and a select few are chosen for the annual buffalo auction on November 17th; with revenues helping to fund Custer State Park’s buffalo program.
