Venus Williams Survives Scare, Wins Wimbledon Opener

Venus Williams may have three Wimbledon singles titles to her credit but she certainly didn’t intimidate the Russian teenager Alla Kudryavtseva on Tuesday, narrowly escaping with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory on Court 2 at the All England Club.

Behind 5-4 and knotted at 30-30 in the final set Williams forced Kudryavtseva to miss a backhand and then followed with a 119 mph serve to even the set at 5-5. Venus was then able to break the Russian’s service game for a 6-5 lead and then served out the victory at love.

Venus Williams captured her Wimbledon singles titles in 2000 against Lindsay Davenport, 2001 against Justine Henin, and 2005 against Davenport. Venus has lost in the finals twice, both times to her sister Serena Williams in 2002 and 2003.
