The stalled immigration bill backed by President George Bush received a breath of life on Tuesday when a Senate test-vote resulted in a 64-35 decision to return to the piece of legislation that could possibly pave the way for more than 12 million illegal immigrants to become legal citizens.
Earlier this month a similar test-vote produced just 45 senators voting in favor of the bill. The extra 19 votes in Tuesday’s outcome came in large part from Republicans who had changed their minds. Jumping from just seven Republicans supporting the bill to 24 Republicans the measure will now move ahead.
Needing 60 votes to move forward with the proceedings the outcome barely received the required amount. While attracting the necessary number of senators on Tuesday the bill will have to pass the same test as early as Thursday.
While the new immigration bill would likely grant amnesty to the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the United States it would also strengthen border security as well as create an system to monitor workplaces in order to deter illegal immigrants.
The immigration bill will be facing a tough road ahead as both Republicans and Democrats will look to make amendments to the bill that could cause supporters to back away.
