Afghan Avalanches Kill at least 24, Hundreds Left Stranded

A series of avalanches has hit a mountain tunnel passage known as the Salang Tunnel in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush, killing at least 24 people and leaving hundreds stranded. Officials already fear that the death toll will rise significantly as reach the victims has proven difficult.

Heavy snowfall of Monday are being blamed for the avalanches that swallowed vehicles and left many trapped inside the Salang Tunnel, the main route from Kabul to the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

Rescue efforts have concentrated on trying to clear the route near the tunnel in hopes of finding survivors in the pass but officials fear fumes may have already killed those still trapped.
