Nigeria’s National Assembly has passed a motion that would require ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua to hand over power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan until he recovers and returns to the country.
Yar’Adua has been in Saudi Arabia since last November receiving treatment for a heart ailment and during that time Nigeria has experienced a freeze in government business as debate rages over who has authority.
On Tuesday both houses of the National Assembly voted in favor of passing power over to Jonathan, declaring he “shall henceforth discharge the functions of the office of president, commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the federation, as acting president.”
Despite the National Assembly’s action Yar’Adua’s cabinet has insisted he is still capable of running the country and carrying out his duties. They have challenged any call for a handover of power and Tuesday’s motion will likely find its way into the courts.
