Rockwall, Texas (Findit) May 27, 2019 - The Last Well, a Christian charity, recently released a blog discussing the various ways to get clean water in Africa. Millions of people across the continent struggle to access clean drinking water, resulting in severe health crises.
When communities lack clean drinking water, their residents' education, safety, and health suffer. Women and children undertake dangerous journeys to bring water to their families, and many children must skip school in order to do so. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty, as they will be less likely to secure higher-paying jobs. Health concerns are also serious. Cholera, dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, and other water-related illnesses are common and can result in death. To protect against these diseases, people must have access to clean drinking water and understand how to keep those sources of water safe and useable. Without these critical resources, hundreds of thousands of people in Africa fall sick each year, affecting their ability to make a living or get an education.
Communities that have access to clean drinking water must work hard to maintain the source of that water. Residents can build rain catchment tanks, which collect and store rainwater and keep it safe. They may also establish practices to protect natural water springs or install sand dams to create sources, ensuring that everyone in the community understands safety rules to keep the water clean. Finally, they can rehabilitate old wells or build new ones. Of these options, building new wells is the fastest and most effective way to get clean water in Africa. A well creates an enclosed, protected source of water that residents can easily access whenever they need water in their daily lives.

The Last Well is undertaking the ambitious goal of providing clean drinking water to everyone in Liberia by the end of 2019. The charity uses a combination of hygiene classes and the construction of wells to meet this commitment and spreads the Word of God to communities in the process.
