With the number one pick in the 2007 NBA Draft on Thursday the Portland Trail Blazers will select either Greg Oden or Kevin Durant, both of whom figure to become dominant players in the NBA. Fortunately for the Seattle SuperSonics who own the number two pick the fortune of landing Oden or Durant should pay immediate dividends to their club.
While it is clear that Oden and Durant will be the top two picks the rest of the NBA Draft is anybody’s guess.
Most believe the Atlanta Hawks will opt to take Al Horford with the number three pick. The power forward from Florida could provide the Hawks a legitimate defensive presence with his 6-9 235 pound frame but his contributions on the offensive side of the ball are questionable.
The Memphis Grizzlies own the number four pick and they may shop it around if they believe the Hawks will take Al Horford with the number three pick. The Grizzlies took point guard Kyle Lowry last season so if they take Mike Conley Jr. this year it may be for trade purposes down the road.
Boston was the biggest casualty of the ping-pong ball lottery and with the number five pick they may not want to take any chances with what’s left on the board. While there’s talent in Jeff Green, Corey Brewer, Spencer Hawes and Brandan Wright there’s also question marks about Joakim Noah and Chinese import Yi Jianlian. For fear of sending their club even further back the Celtics may trade their pick in hopes of picking up a proven veteran to dig the franchise out of a deep hole.
With the number six pick the Milwaukee Bucks will likely take the best remaining player on the board in Jeff Green. At 6-9 Green fills an immediate need for the Bucks who are lacking at the forward position. If the Bucks ignore Green then their likely to take Brandan Wright who would also fit in nicely with their needs.
The 2007 NBA Draft will be covered live on June 28 on ESPN beginning at 7:00 pm.
