Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is working on building an entirely new structure at its Fremont Factory that will include a solar roof installation to test its latest version of Tesla’s solar power product.
Tesla first lunged its solar roof tiles back in 2017, and the automaker stated that it would start volume product installation in 2018. However, the actual rollout of the product has been much slower and installations have been limited to homes of some executives and a few of its customers.
Elon Musk said that they had to make some changes and adjustments to the product to make sure it would last 30 years.
At the 2019 shareholder’s meeting, Musk stated “We are about to complete version 3 of the solar roof. This is actually quite a hard technology problem to have an integrated solar cell with a roof tile, have it look good, and last for 30 years.”
According to a recently submitted building permit, Tesla is building a structure to test the new solar roof tiles at the Fremont Factory.
