While the New York Yankees handed Roger Clemens just over $28 million to return to the mound for one more season in hopes of turning around a dreadful starting rotation they may just have to be satisfied with watching Clemens move up the career wins list instead.
The 44-year-old seven time Cy Young Award-winner will take the mound tonight in pursuit of his 350th career win. If Clemens can earn the win tonight it would move him to within eleven victories of tying Kid Nichols for seventh on the all-time list. Clemens would need another two after that to tie Warren Spahn and then one more to equal the win total of Pud Galvin for the fifth spot.
In his three starts this season Clemens has posted a 1-2 record with a 5.09 ERA; not exactly what George Steinbrenner was looking for when he opened up his wallet. Now Clemens will be facing his first American League opponent of the season in the Baltimore Orioles.
Clemens owns a 19-11 career mark against Baltimore but he’ll have to hope his Yankees offense can produce a few more runs than they did in last night’s 3-2 loss in the series opener.
The Yankees are currently 36-38 and sit 11 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East heading into tonight’s games.
