The Toronto’s Frank Thomas became just the 21st major league baseball player in history to hit at least 500 home runs when he sent a Carlos Silva offering into the left field seats in the first inning of the Blue Jays game against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.
The three-run round tripper fell behind in the count 1-2 but then turned on Silva’s next delivery for the historic blast.
While he currently ranks 21st on the all-time list Thomas has an excellent chance to move up the ladder as he takes aim at Eddie Murray (504), Mel Ott (511), Ernie Banks and Eddie Matthews (512). The Big Hurt has an outside shot this year of catching Ted Williams and Willie McCovey who both finished with 521 career blasts.
Playing in his 18th season, Thomas spent his first 16 years with the Chicago White Sox before leaving after a bitter war of words with the front office. He hit 448 home runs in a White Sox uniform, his first coming against the Minnesota Twins in 1990.
