Michael Bloomberg Not Eligible For New Hampshire Primary
New Hampshire primary is open to independent voters but not to independent candidates. This means that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will not be eligible to compete in the New Hampshire primary as he is no longer affiliated to a party.
Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat, and became a Republican just before he decided to run for mayor in 2001.
However, Bloomberg is insisting that just because he had changed his voter registration again, it does not mean that he is running for president. However, should he decide to run for president, he will not be able to do so in the first primary of the country without re-registering himself with a party.
According to the law in New Hampshire, only candidates who are registered as Republicans or Democrats can run in the primary. However, for the voters party affiliation is not a requirement.
In New Hampshire, voters who are not affiliated with either the Republicans or the Democrats make up 44 percent of the registered voters. This percentage is more that the registered Republican and Democratic voters. Independent voters are expected to turn out in large numbers in the New Hampshire primary to cast their ballots.
According to Bloomberg’s supports, Bloomberg will wait till the New Hampshire primary is over and there is a clear indication of front-runners before deciding whether he would run as an independent presidential candidate.
