A car packed with explosives capable of “severe injuries and loss of loss” was discovered and detonated early Friday morning after an ambulance noticed the vehicle parked in London’s nightclub district.
The ambulance crew called London police when they noticed smoke filling the car parked just outside the popular club “Tiger Tiger” in Haymarket shortly after 2:00 a.m.
When explosives experts arrived they discovered a device inside the vehicle that was comprised of 50 gallons of fuel, gas cylinders and nails, all connected to a detonator. Officers on the scene were then able to dismantle to device, preventing a potential tragedy.
Peter Clarke, chief of the anti-terror unit for the British police, said “even at this stage it is obvious that if the device had detonated, there could have been severe injuries and loss of life.”
The scare brought back the grim reminder that nearly two years ago Islamic extremists attacked the London transportation system and killed 52 people in a series of suicide bombings.
