Gadget geeks and people who simply want the latest in consumer technology will be lining up at Apple outlets and AT&T stores today to buy the first batch of iPhones.
The new phone by Apple Inc., which functions as a cell phone, music player and Internet device, goes on sale at 6 p.m. at two Milwaukee-area Apple stores and seven AT&T stores.
AT&T stores plan to close temporarily at 4:30 p.m. to gear up for the sales of iPhones, which will be available in limited quantities. AT&T stores will stay open until 10 p.m. to accommodate buyers. Apple stores will close from 2 to 6 p.m., then be open until midnight.
AT&T said it plans to limit sales of iPhones to one per customer. Apple stores will have a two-iPhones-per-customer limit. Apple could sell as many as 200,000 iPhones in the first two days of its release, according to the most optimistic analysts' estimates.
The iPhone will go on sale at 6 p.m. in each U.S. time zone. Apple said customers can go to its Web site -- www.apple.com/retail to check whether their local store has the product in stock.
Online sales of iPhones won't begin until 9 p.m. EDT or 8 p.m. in Wisconsin.
Apple is offering two versions: a 4-gigabyte model for $499 and an 8-gigabyte version for $599. Each requires a two-year service contract with AT&T Inc., the largest U.S. wireless carrier.
Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs expects the iPhone to become Apple's third main business, alongside the Macintosh computer and iPod, which each deliver $10 billion in annual sales. The company has a goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008, capturing 1 percent of the mobile-phone market.
