Craig Biggio became just the 27th player in major league history to collect 3,000 hits after singling off Colorado Rockies starter Aaron Cook in the seventh inning of the Houston Astros 8-5 win.
Entering Thursday night’s game Biggio needed three hits to reach the historic number. The future Hall of Famer collected his first hit in the bottom of the third and then was credited with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth for career hit number 2,999. When he came to the plate in the seventh Biggio worked the count to 2-0 and then drove the next delivery to center field for the milestone. The Astros second-baseman was then thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double but it marked a perfect time for the game to be delayed while his teammates rushed the field.
Biggio, who has played his entire 20-year career with the Astros, dragged friend and longtime teammate Jeff Bagwell out of the dugout in order to share the moment with the guy he played 15 seasons alongside.
In the ninth Biggio added number 3,001 to his career mark and collected 3,002 in the eleventh to complete a 5-6 night at the plate.
Carlos Lee made sure that Biggio’s historic night ended in appropriate fashion as he gave the Astros an 8-5 victory with a walk-off grand slam to end the game.
With Biggio now at 3,002 on the hit list he sits just five shy of Al Kaline’s career mark and is likely to surpass Rickey Henderson’ s mark of 3,055 career hits and enter the top 20.
