Sunday’s vote count in Ukraine’s presidential election resulted in a win for Viktor Yanukovych yet the camp supporting rival Yulia Tymoshenko has challenged those results and demanded a recount in certain areas.
Those recount calls have come despite international observers declaring the election to be transparent and unbiased, a declaration that led Yanukovych to insist Tymoshenko abandon her protests and resign as the country’s prime minister.
Yanukovych, who won by 3.48%, made the call in a statement posted on his Party of Regions website, stating “I call on the prime minister to resign and go into opposition.” He went on to say, “I want to remind Mrs Tymoshenko that the basis of democracy is the will of the people. Democratic leaders always accept the results of the elections. The country does not need a new crisis.”
Tymoshenko has not released a statement concerning her position since results were revealed on Sunday. While her supporters have called for a challenge to the results she is facing heavy pressure from others to accept the results.
The victory for Yanukovych marks an end to the 2004 Orange Revolution that swept through Ukraine on the promise of change yet the country has found itself in an economic mess and continuing to struggle in its fight against corruption.
For Yanukovych Sunday’s results represent vindication as he had originally been declared the winner of the 2004 presidential election but those results were overturned by the Supreme Court, a ruling that put Viktor Yushchenko in the office of the presidency and made Tymoshenko the country’s prime minister.
