Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney concedes that he’ll never win the approval of PETA but he has defended his choice of transportation for his family’s Irish Setter when making trips in the car.
The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have called into question Romney’s decision to place his dog in a rooftop carrier that was strapped to the family car on a trip from Boston to Ontario in 1983.
In a statement from PETA president Ingrid Newkirk the organization’s opinion was made clear, “If you wouldn’t strap your child to the roof of your car, you have no business doing that to the family dog, I don’t know who would find that acceptable.”
Romney has insisted that the Irish Setter enjoyed the trip and often looked forward to the journey atop the vehicle noting he “got in all by himself and enjoyed it.”
