Heroin addiction treatment - a clean start for Leif Garret
Court mandated treatment for heroin addicted music star
Connecticut | New York- Former teen star Leif Garrett is no stranger to drugs. His drug use spans nearly 30 years and has resulted in far more than one drug related arrest during that time period. His most recent arrest came nearly a week ago, when police officers approached him in an underground station in LA, after observing him shaking and sweating while standing on the platform. At first Leif denied having any drugs on his person, but later recanted, admitting to having black tar heroin in his shoe. He was subsequently arrested and just today, he was formally charged with heroin possession.
This isn’t the first time Garrett has been arrested on heroin charges. Back 2006 he was also arrested and charged with heroin possession. He was held in jail without bail and sentenced to a court mandated live-in drug rehab program. Thinking the program was too strict, however, Garrett fled and was then sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation. Since then, he has been placed in custody for failing a drug test.
“As we see with Mr. Garrett, mandated drug addiction treatment is a contested issue”, states a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “An individual must at some point want to get clean. They must want to live a life free of drugs and alcohol. That’s not something that can be taught, forced or otherwise coerced. It’s a decision a person must come to themselves, in their own time, in order to be successful. Often an individual will enter a mandated program unwilling and then something happens that awakens the desire for change. The hope is that it doesn’t take too much time for that person to come to the realization that he/she has a problem and needs help—it’s literally a matter of life or death. We certainly hope Mr. Garrett’s most recent arrest will result on a positive outcome. After all, a drug addiction is never about the drug—it’s always about the person; it’s always something deeper.”
Garrett will soon learn his fate through the judicial system. And, hopefully, he’ll decide himself to get clean and turn over a new-- Leif.
