Election Issues: McCain’s Views

John McCain thinks that the United States has been neglecting Latin American, and as a result it has allowed the militants and terrorists to gain a foothold there and this has had adverse effects on the national security of the country.

McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, gave example of the plot that was recently discovered where individuals from Guyana and Trinidad had plotted to attack the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York. He also cited the increase in Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups in Latin America.

McCain has been supporting President George W Bush’s plan on Iraq war. This has been one of the main reasons why he has been trailing in the national polls.

McCain said that the US should provide more assistance to Latin American countries so that they could shore up their security over land, sea and air. He further added that the governments of Latin American countries should also take measures to improve their electoral systems and trade ties in the region.

McCain feels that security should be of prime importance in Latin America so that the terrorists and their supporters have no place to hide.

With regard to Cuba, McCain said that the US embargo would stay in place until Cuba released all political prisoners, all political parties in the country were legalized and the country held free and fair elections.

McCain is a supporter of the plan to revamp the US immigration laws and he has drawn a lot of flak from other Republicans over it. He thinks that Mexico should work along with the US to stem the flow of Mexicans crossing over illegally to the US .
