Venus Williams didn’t display much of the skill and power that has won her three Wimbledon singles titles but she did show the perseverance needed to overcome some tough obstacles and eventually beat Akiko Morigami 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 at the All England Club.
The match was a continuation from Saturday after rain forced the pair to delay their contest with Williams down 1-4 in the second set.
Morigami eventually took the second set and then had Williams down 3-5 in the third set but Venus broke serve and then served to even the score at 5-5. Morigami lost serve again and then Williams managed to close out the Japanese star with four straight service winners.
While Venus captured the match the numbers were certainly not pretty. She totaled 14 double faults while committing 42 unforced errors while facing 23 break points throughout the contest.
Venus will now face the 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.
