It was a good three-month stretch for Barack Obama as the senator from Illinois raised over $32.5 million for his presidential campaign and pushed him past his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in donation dollars.
Clinton’s camp had estimated that Hillary would raise close to $27 million in the three-month period of April, May and June and had conceded that Obama would hold an advantage in the donation race. But it’s not all bad news for Hillary Clinton as she still holds a rather commanding lead in the polls.
Heading into the third quarter Obama will likely have to start spending a large amount of his donations to make headway in the race. Most expect the Senator to become more aggressive in his advertising campaigns as a means of getting his message heard.
The cost shouldn’t be a problem for Obama as he is reported to have at least $31 million in donations for the Democratic primaries. Obama, much like Clinton, has a substantial amount of money for the general election but that money cannot be used during the primaries.
In raising $32.5 million during the three-month stretch Obama set a new record that was previously held by Clinton when she raised $26 million in the first three months.
