When the summer started Hollywood was abuzz about the numbers that ‘Spider-Man 3,” “Shrek the Third’ and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” would put up but now there’s a new player in the blockbuster world and it’s a throwback to the 1980s.
“Transformers” smashed the opening day record for a Tuesday premier grabbing $27.4 million at the box-office, easily surpassing the $15.7 million “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” hauled in a year ago.
Based on the cartoon and toy craze of the 1980s, “Transformers” presents two robot clans that share opposing ideologies. While the Decepticons favor world domination the Autobots look to live in peace with their human neighbors.
Among those humans cast in the sci-fi thriller are Jon Voight, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. For LaBeouf it is yet another successful 2007 movie. He landed huge numbers for “Disturbia” as well as the animated flick “Surf’s Up” earlier this year.
