The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Russia’s resort town of Sochi after the International Olympic Committee voted 51-47 in favor of the Black Sea town over the South Korean city of Pyeongchang.
In the first round of voting the Austrian resort city of Salzburg was eliminated. It was the second straight first round elimination for Salzburg which also launched a failed bid for the 2010 Winter Games; those Olympics will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The first round vote favored Pyeongchang which tallied 36 votes followed closely by Sochi which totaled 34 while Salzburg finished with 25 votes. In the second round head-to-head match up between Sochi and Pyeongchang the Russian resort town was able to attract an additional 17 votes to win the bid.
Shortly after the second round vote IOC president Jacques Rogge opened the sealed envelope contain the name of the host city and revealed, “The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing the 22nd Olympic Winter Games in 2014 are awarded to the city of Sochi.”
