Iranians Rally to Mark 31st Anniversary of Revolution
Marking the most important day on their political calendar, hundreds of thousands of Iranians rallied in Tehran’s Azadi Square to mark the 31st anniversary of the nation’s revolution.
As part of the celebrations President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the crowds, declaring Iran was now a “nuclear state” and would continue to defy the pressure of Western powers to limit their nuclear ambitions.
In an effort to stave off opposition rallies the Iranian government blanketed the city with security forces which included police and members of the Basij militia. Despite the massive presence of security some opposition demonstrators have made it to the city but have been met by tear gas and according to some reports gunfire.
