Teen Summer Camps Enrich High School Students' Lives

One of the country’s leading teen summer camps announces four new locations for its summer 2010 summer enrichment programs. SuperCamp is adding UCLA and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Ivy League school Brown University in Providence, Rhode Islan, and college prep school Lake Forest Academy in Chicago.

These additions give SuperCamp a total of nine locations for 2010. The other five school are Stanford, the University of Washington, Colorado College, Wake Forest and Cal State San Marcos.

SuperCamp offers four programs: Junior Forum for middle school students, Senior Forum, a high school summer program for students entering grades 9-12 in the fall, Leadership Forum for students who have completed two years of Senior Forum, and Quantum U for incoming and current college students.

In a study of over 6,000 SuperCamp graduates, 73 percent of graduates reported achieving higher grades after attending SuperCamp. An astonishing 98 percent of graduates indicated that they continued to use the skills they learned following camp, while 84 percent said their self-esteem improved and 81 percent note an increase in confidence.

One of the major reasons for SuperCamp’s success is that the educational summer camps combine academic skills, learning skills and physical challenges, which together help to develop the whole person. As a result, SuperCamp is able to create meaningful transformations in students in as little as seven days.

Bobbi DePorter, SuperCamp’s co-founder and president says one of the reasons for this level of success is that, “We create a series of mini-success moments for each student, so they leave SuperCamp feeling more comfortable with who they are and more confident in their ability to succeed at anything they put their minds to.”

Ms. DePorter first applied similar accelerated learning techniques with entrepreneurs almost 30 years ago. Then, in 1982, she launched SuperCamp in response to adult students telling her that this learning and life skills training would be ideal for their children.

Each camp balances academics with fun activities such as a ropes course and features a dynamic, interactive learning environment that maximizes the long-term retention of the information provided.
