Seattle SuperSonics Hire P.J. Carlesimo as New Head Coach

The Seattle SuperSonics hired San Antonio Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo as their new head coach on Thursday ending a two month quest to land the right man for the job.

Carlesimo will now take over a team that lost its two top scorers in Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis but gained Kevin Durant and Jeff Green on draft night. It will be Carlesimo’s job to blend the young talent on the Sonics roster to try and improve on a disappointing 31-51 record from last season.

Seattle will be Carlesimo’s third head coaching job in the NBA. He held the Portland Trail Blazers head coaching job from 1994-1997 but never made it out of the first round of the playoffs. Carlesimo moved from the Trail Blazers to the Golden State Warriors in 1997 where he compiled a 46-113 record over two seasons.
