The Al Gore inspired Live Earth series of global concerts set for Saturday has added an additional host for the environmental awareness festival. Washington D.C. joins New York, London, Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, Tokyo, Hamburg, and Rio de Janeiro as hosts for the shows.
The concert in Rio de Janeiro was cancelled by a judge due to security issues but that decision was later reversed.
Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks are expected to headline the Washington concert while the Police, Smashing Pumpkins, John Mayer, Ludacris and Kelly Clarkson are among the musicians taking the stage in New York.
Madonna, the Beastie Boys, Artic Monkey, Snow Patrol, Damien Rice and Metallica will be in London; Crowded House, Ghostwriters and Jack Johnson will headline in Sydney; Joss Stone and UB40 are in Johannesburg; Linkin Park and Rihanna are reportedly set to perform in Tokyo; Shakira and Snoop Dogg are in Hamburg; Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell Williams and Macy Gray will be in Rio; and Anthony Wong, Twelve Girls Band and Soler will be in Shanghai.
Live Earth was created as a vehicle to bring about awareness surrounding climate change and the dangers of global warming. Al Gore has recently stated that he would not enter the U.S. presidential race but would rather campaign for environmental issues on a global scale.
