Death Toll from Afghan Avalanche Hits 169, Expected to Rise

The death toll from an avalanche that struck a main stretch of road connecting southern Afghanistan to the north and Central Asia has hit 169 people and officials expect that number to climb significantly as rescue efforts turn to recovery in the Salang Pass.

Fresh snow had continued to fall in the area making it nearly impossible for search crews to reach buried vehicles that have victims trapped inside.

According to reports the series of avalanches that have struck since Monday slammed with such force into vehicles that windows were smashed and several cars were sent tumbling into the valley below the pass that winds through the mountainside of the Hindu Kush.
