After entering Wimbledon as a No. 23 seed most in the tennis world dismissed the thought of Venus Williams capturing her fourth title at the All England Club but after beating number two seed Maria Sharapova, five seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and six seed Ana Ivanovic there was little Marion Bartoli could do to stop the American’s momentum on Saturday.
Williams made short work of the Frenchwoman, winning 6-4, 6-1 to earn her fourth Wimbledon singles title and her sixth Grand Slam title.
Most of the match between the surprise finalists was error free as Williams committed 12 unforced errors while Bartoli tallied just nine. Venus recorded one ace throughout the match, a surprising tally for the woman known for her power game.
While her ace total was low Venus did won 77 percent of her first serve offerings and had 29 winners compared to the seven recorded by Bartoli.
Williams’ previous Wimbledon victories came in 2000, 2001 and 2005.
