Roger Federer has his problems on clay but when it comes to grass the 25-year-old Swiss star continued his dominance, defeating Raphael Nadal 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2 for his fifth straight Wimbledon title. Federer’s overhand smash at the net to end the match completed his 34th straight win at the All England Club and marked his 53rd straight victory overall.
For Federer, the victory also equaled the five straight Wimbledon titles Bjorn Borg captured from 1976-1980. On a more historic note Federer earned his 11th major title to tie him with Borg and Rod Laver. Federer now sits just one major title away from tying Roy Emerson for second most and three from tying Pete Sampras who hold the record at 14.
Of his five straight Wimbledon titles Sunday was most certainly the toughest as he had to fight off four break points early in the fifth set before settling down to take a 3-2 advantage. Federer then managed to break Nadal’s serve and take a 4-2 lead and then finished the Spaniard out.
Federer finished the match with 24 aces and 65 winners while limiting Nadal to a single ace in the entire match.
It was the second straight year Federer defeated Nadal in the Wimbledon final and eased the pain of losing the last two French Open finals on the clay courts of Roland Garros to the Spaniard.
