Proving once again that nostalgia pays off, the 1980s cartoon “Transformers” filled the seats of theaters across the country and banked $67.6 million at the box-office to earn the top spot over the weekend.
The warring shape-shifters have now totaled $152.5 million since it opened with preview screenings on Monday evening and followed with a record setting Tuesday performance.
Staring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Jon Voight, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson the movie is based on the cartoon and toy craze of the 1980s.“Transformers” presents two robot clans that share opposing ideologies. While the Decepticons favor world domination the Autobots look to live in peace with their human neighbors.
Last week’s number one, Disney’s “Ratatouille,” added another $29 million to its haul and gave it a ten-day total of $109.5 million to take the two spot at the box-office.
Bruce Willis continues to be a box-office draw as “Live Free or Die Hard” kept pace in its second weekend with $17.4 million after earning $33.5 its opening weekend.
Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley can now rest easy as “Pirates of the Caribbean” became the third film of the summer to top the $300 million mark domestically after pushing their total to $301.7 million with a $3 million weekend.
