Four Sentenced to Life for Conspiracy to Murder in London Transit System Bombing Plot
Four men arrested for their involvement in the failed bombings of London’s transit system on July 21, 2005 were sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday after being found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
The planned attack was designed to take place just two weeks after 52 people were killed in London by al-Qaida-inspired suicide attacks on the same transit system. A jury on Monday declared the four men guilty of planning a large scale bombing that included attacks on three subway trains and a bus.
Each of the men denied the charges and indicated that the bombs were merely props and were not actually explosives. They said they were simply protesting the war in Iraq. Those claims were refuted by police and prosecutors in the case who offered evidence from tests that indicated the bombs were fully capable to causing massive damage and loss of life.
Basing his sentence on the destructive results of the July 7 bombings Judge Adrian Fulford said the four men were fully aware of what would happen if the bombing took place. The judge said “at least 50 people would have died, hundreds of people would have been wounded, thousands would have had their lives permanently damaged, disfigured or otherwise, whether they were Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, agnostic or atheist.”
