Alex Rodriguez and New York Yankees to Begin Contract Talks

For all the talk that Alex Rodriguez will never be considered a real member of the New York Yankees the club seems to be willing to bend over backward to keep the third baseman in pinstripes.

The threat of A-Rod exiting New York after the season has become such a concern that management has shown a willingness to break from tradition and discuss a contract extension during the season.

Rodriguez, currently the highest salaried major league baseball player, can opt out of his contract following next year, two years earlier than his contract is signed through. As part of their willingness to extend Rodriguez’s contract the Yankees want the two-time American League MVP to agree to an extension that would begin after the 2010 season.

At the All-Star break Alex Rodriguez was hitting .317 with 30 home runs and 86 RBIs.
