“Hairspray” is highly anticipated

Expectations are high for the upcoming musical “Hairspray” that will be out in theaters next Friday.

Last night at the Los Angeles premier of the movie John Travolta told “The Insider,” “I know how hard these thing are to do, and I waited 30 years [since ‘Grease’] to do my next one.”

Travolta’s co-star Queen Latifah also said she was excited about the musical coming to theaters. “To me that’s what the movie-making experience is about – being able to come into a movie theater, sit down for a couple of hours and go to another place,” she told “The Insider.” “There is nothing like a musical comedy.”

“Hairspray” was originally a Broadway ‘smash,’ The story follows a teen girl, Tracy Turnblad, from Baltimore who is a little over weight but becomes popular from a TV dance show. The girl uses her fame for good and uses it to tear down racial barriers.

Travolta plays Tracy’s mom, Edna. Co-star Michelle Pfeiffer plays the ‘villainous’ Velma Von Tussle who runs the dance show that makes Tracy popular.

“Hairspray” is directed by Adam Shankman and also stars Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, James Marsden, Christopher Walken, Britney Snow and Amanda Bynes.
