Haiti will be marking the one month period after a devastating earthquake killed more than 217,000 people with a national day of mourning on Friday.
With much of Port-au-Prince still in ruins the ceremony began near the city’s destroyed cathedral with several other services scheduled throughout the country. One of those ceremonies has been held at the site of a mass grave where tens of thousands of bodies were buried shortly after the quake.
The main ceremony was beside the National Palace with the government placing several large screens at tented relief camps so that the one million people left homeless following the quake could watch. President Rene Preval attended the ceremony and could be seen weeping during a service led by a Catholic bishop and the head of the Voodoo priests.
At 4:53 pm local time, the time at which the quake struck. Haitians across the world are being asked to kneel in prayer.
