San Diego Padres pitcher David Wells was suspended by Major League Baseball for seven games for “inappropriate actions” related to an on-field incident with umpire Ed Hickox in a July 7 game against the Atlanta Braves.
Wells had been frustrated with several of Hickox’s calls behind the plate and after Jeff Francoeur hit a home run in the fourth inning to give the Braves a 3-1 lead the portly lefthander began yelling at Hickox.
The suspension is set to begin on Friday, July 13 unless the 44-year-old elects to appeal the decision.
Over his 21-year career Wells has compiled a 234-153 record, he is currently 4-5 this season.
