Olympic Luge Star Nodar Kumaritashvili Dies in Crash

Only hours before the Winter Olympics were scheduled to open in Vancouver on Friday, Georgian luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed during training at the Whistler Sliding Center. The 21-year-old died after he was slung from his sled and hit a steel pole at 90 mph.

"Georgian slider Nodar Kumaritashvili has had a serious crash in the final run of official training for the men's singles on Friday. He fell out of the track when he crashed. He was treated on site by medical staff who administered CPR, and was then taken away in an ambulance,” an Olympic official said in a statement.

Other athletes have been involved in crashes on the course. Training was suspended after Kumaritashvili’s death.
