Rapper Remy Ma charged with attempted murder

Rapper Remy Ma turned herself in to New York City police on July 14 on charges of attempted murder in relation to a shooting that morning at a nightclub.

Police say Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, was involved in an altercation with a long time friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph. Witnesses say that Smith became enraged when she discovered a $2,000 USD was missing from her purse. The Grammy-nominated rapper accused Makeda of the theft because she claims Makeda was the last one to have her purse.

Although there is no security video footage of the shooting, police believe Smith was responsible for the gunshot wound to the torso that sent Barnes-Joseph to the hospital. Barnes-Joseph reportedly identified Smith as the shooter.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire which led them to 23-year-old Makeda. Officers discovered a blue Cadillac Escalade belonging to Smith a few blocks away from the shooting. The SUV crashed into a parked car and was abandoned.

Barnes-Joseph is said to be in stable condition at a hospital.

Among Smith’s achievements is a Grammy nomination as part of the rap group ‘Terror Squad’ for the 2004 hit “Lean Back” and the 2005 BET award “Best Female Hip Hop.” Last year she moved on to a solo career and released her album “There’s Something About Remy.” She has also recorded with famous rappers including Fat Joe, Eminem and R. Kelly.

Smith reported to police Saturday evening and is facing charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Attorney Scott Leemon was with the 26-year old when she turned herself in to police and said, “I ask everyone to keep an open mind. Things are not always as they seem.”
