A powerful 6.7 earthquake shook Japan shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time on Monday leaving at least seven dead and injuring hundreds.
The quake destroyed several hundred homes, buckled roads and caused a fire at one of the world’s most powerful nuclear power plants in Kashiwazaki. Crews were able to extinguish the flames, preventing a radioactive release.
Kashiwazaki is believed to be the hardest hit with more than 300 homes destroyed in the city of more than 95,000.
Early reports indicated that seven people were confirmed dead while more than 800 have been injured.
