Corporate Sustainability Officer Training

Every Company needs a Sustainability Officer

As the confusion about sustainable businesses clears, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are two fundamental pieces for a sustainable business.  The first of which is the need for every business to install a trained sustainability officer.  More officially known as the Corporate Sustainability Officer.  The second expectation is the creation of a comprehensive sustainability plan for the company which is the primary task of the Corporate Sustainability Officer.

There are many narrow or self-interested sustainability programs in the market now, but the whole concept was greatly helped by Executive Order #13514 that President Obama signed in late 2009.  In fact, the order applied to governmental agencies, but still provides a clear outline of the future expectations for any Green or sustainable business.  The order was a holistic approach to Green and sustainable issues on many levels.  The order required the installation of a sustainability officer and the preparation of a sustainability plan.

It might be helpful to point out a few fundamental definitions as businesses seek to lay claim to the sustainable concept.  The concept of Green is best defined as a "Health Related" practice although is often misapplied to anything "environmental."  The concept of Sustainability is best defined as "the management of our resources."  Sustainability is not singularly focused on energy reduction and carbon emissions.

It is the primary task of the Corporate Sustainability Officer to develop a sustainability plan that is tailored to the company and covers both Green practices as well as sustainable practices.  For example, indoor air quality hiring a cleaning service is a Green subject, whereas energy and waste reduction strategies would be classified as sustainable issues.

If this information is a bit of an eye opener for your company, then perhaps it is time to send a key person in your firm to Corporate Sustainability Officer training.  The concept of developing a sustainability report for the company is a more complex task than most would think, but can be made easy with a clear outline of options and a methodology to organize a workable program.

Working with the
Green Business League offers even more opportunity for a company.  If the trained sustainability officer properly applies his or her knowledge, the company can accumulate enough Green Points to achieve an earned Green business certification from a nationally-recognized organization.  This certification proudly stands out in contrast to the "Easy Green" certifications that are offered over the Internet for only a fee payment.

Corporate Sustainability Officer training will be held on May 18-20 and June 10-12, 2010 in the Chicago, IL area.  This program is a great addition to any resume, and enhances the value of the employee to the firm.  Companies of all sizes are encouraged to send one or more employees to these three-day training sessions that will provide an immense value to the company's future value.
