Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo has dissolved the country’s government and electoral commission, accusing the two bodies of attempting to manipulate the long-delayed elections.
Gbagbo had said the electoral commission, headed by opposition member Robert Beugre Mambe, was trying to add several hundreds of thousands of people to the electoral roll, something the president’s supporters have been trying to block. Those supporters have said the names were those of foreigners not eligible to vote.
Those claims have been disputed by the opposition who have said Gbagbo supporters were trying to remove the names because they were unlikely to vote for the president.
Gbagbo made the announcement that the government had been dissolved on Friday, telling reporters “I want a government that serves the interests of the Ivorian people and not the orders of political parties,” and asked Prime Minister Guillaume Soro to form a new government.
The president went on to say, “The mission of this new government will be, under the authority of the president and the prime minister, to complete the final actions necessary to bring Ivory Coast out of its political crisis.”
