Switzerland’s Simon Ammann captured Winter Olympics gold on Saturday after winning the men’s individual normal hill ski jumping event, the first gold handed out at the Vancouver Games.
Ammann totaled 276.5 points after landing the longest jumps in both rounds. The Swiss star put down a jump of 105 meters in his opening jump and then soared to 108 meters on his second to easily secure his third Olympic gold. He took the same event at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.
Polish veteran Adam Malysz finished a distant second with a total of 269.5 points to take silver while Austria’s Gregor Schlierenzauer finished on the podium with bronze after putting up 268.0 points.
