Ken Griffey Jr. hit career home run number 587 in the Cincinnati Reds 10-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. Griffey’s historic blast moved him past the great Frank Robinson for sixth place on the all-time home run list. Griffey now sits 15 home runs shy of Texas Rangers’ slugger Sammy Sosa and 73 short of Willie Mays.
Playing in his 19th season, Griffey has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts after suffering through several injury plagued seasons. With his 24th home run of the season on Monday he is now on pace to hit 43 by the end of the year, a number he hasn’t reached since 1999 while playing with the Seattle Mariners.
In Griffey’s first eleven seasons with the Mariners he hit 398 home runs but after being traded to the Cincinnati Reds the nine-time All-Star hit a string of injuries and has hit 189 home runs over the past seven and a half seasons.
Number 587 from Griffey gave the Reds a 5-0 lead in the second inning against the Atlanta Braves.
