The Humane Society criticized pop princess Britney Spears after she spent $3,000 on a Yorkshire Terrier puppy and only spent less than 30 minutes in the Pets of Bel Air pet store.
Stephanie Shain, Humane Society director, says Spears is setting a “damaging example to the public.” Shain and the animal rights group believe that Spears should have taken more time in choosing her puppy.
“Choosing a job is a major lifestyle decision that should not be taken lightly. We suggest that people take time to choose a member of their family, and to be sure they are working with a reputable breeder,” Shain says.
“Ms. Spears is setting a damaging example to the public. Most dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills – factory-like facilities, churning out purebred and ‘designer’ puppies in large numbers,” Shain said in a statement. “Puppy mills look only to make a profit, commonly disregard the dog’s physical and emotional health, and do not adhere to sound breeding practices.”
Shain goes on to say the result is often sick puppies who suffer from mental and physical problems. “Every time someone purchases a dog from a pet store, they risk perpetuating the horrendous business of puppy mills,” she says.
The pet boutique adamantly denies that they buy their animals from puppy mills and says they only deal with top breeders.
