David Beckham’s American soccer debut may be put on hold

David Beckham’s American soccer debut may be put on hold after his injured ankle remained sore and swollen. Beckham signed a $250 million, 5 year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy and was scheduled to debut Saturday in a game against Chelsea.

Early last month Beckham injured his left ankle while playing in a Euro 2008 qualifying game. Coach Frank Yallop said the 32-year-old may have aggravated the injury during the he and his family’s flight from the U.K. to L.A. last Thursday.

The sports star reportedly passed a team work out Monday to do a 45 minute workout with trainer Ivan Pierra.

Beckham confirmed the possibility he may not play on Saturday. “Hopefully I’ll be alright,” Beckham said.

“We’re not going to force him to play. That would be wrong. If he’s ready to play, he will, but we’ll wait and see. We wont put him in and danger of making it long term,” Yallop said.

“There’s always a possibility that he will not be playing because of his injury, but hopefully he will be.”
