Jerry Yang approached the final table at the World Series of Poker in eighth place on Tuesday and by the time the last hand was played shortly after 4 a.m. on Wednesday the 39-year-old Vietnamese born psychologist won the coveted WSOP bracelet and the $8.25 million top prize.
Of the eight other poker players sitting at the final table Yang was responsible for sending seven home, the last being Tuan Lam whose pair of queens wasn’t enough to top Yang’s straight.
Yang credited his fortune to luck but most people watching knew it was his aggressive play that earned him the massive pay day. With Lam going all-in on an ace and queen of diamonds before the flop Yang called on a pair of pocket eights. When a queen, five and nine were turned on the flop it appeared as if Lam’s queens would cut into Yang’s 81.5 million chip lead but a seven on the turn gave Yang hope and a six on the river gave him a bracelet as his straight was set.
Before play began on Tuesday Yang pledged that he would donate ten percent of his winnings to charity
