John Edwards On Bush’s Iraq Policy

North Carolina Senator John Edwards was extremely critical of the way President Bush has handled the Iraq war. Edwards, who is a Democratic presidential candidate, said that the President was making mistakes after mistakes, and needed to be checked. Edwards urged the Congress to intervene in the matter since only the Congress had the powers to alter the course of the President.

Edwards made his comments in response to a press conference by President Bush. According to Bush, the Congress was trying to withdraw support to his policies on Iraq which was not acceptable to him. Bush stated that the Congress should concentrate more on funding the troops in Iraq rather than the war.

However, Edwards seems to be not to agree with President Bush. According to him, President Bush did not have any idea about the aftermath of Iraq war.  Edwards said that in 2002, President Bush was only allowed by the Congress to depose Saddam Hussein. However, he did not have the Congress’ permission to monitor a civil war that is currently occurring in Iraq.

Earlier in the year, the Congress had voted to support the war spending bill which also included the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. However, the bill was passed without indicating any timetable for withdrawal of troops. Edwards is hopeful that the Congress will press President Bush for a timetable on withdrawal.
