Former North Carolina senator John Edwards and New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton were recently caught discussing their presidential campaign plans. Both Democratic presidential candidates were planning to cut short their joint appearance so as to exclude competition from some lesser known candidates.
All these whisperings were caught when Edwards and Clinton participated in a forum held in Detroit last week. Edwards preferred a smaller group, and Clinton had similar thoughts. Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich from Ohio, who is also a Democratic presidential candidate, was furious at these revelations. According to him, these sorts of activities where candidates were trying to rig an election and then denying their role had a negative impact on the integrity of the party.
When confronted, both Edwards and Clinton gave different explanations. Clinton reiterated that she liked taking part in forums, and thereby shifting the entire responsibility onto Edwards. According to Edwards, his words were misinterpreted. His intention was to not to stop anybody from participating in the forum. Edwards believes that it would be better to separate presidential candidates into two separate groups, with each group having four randomly selected candidates. This would enable a more serious and purposeful discussion.
With all the behind the scenes collaboration and collusion going on between presidential candidates, it makes one wonder whether the US elections will be fair and square.
