The Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson considers Utah as one of the important states that could create a major impact on the presidential election outcome. Richardson was in Salt Lake City last week to garner funds and endorsements from Rocky Anderson and Peter Corroon, who are the Mayors of Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County respectively
While addressing a gathering of Democrats at This Is the Place State Park in Utah last week, Richardson expressed hope that Utah along with certain other states would prove to be vital in his scheme of things during his presidential campaign.
Utah is gradually becoming popular with presidential candidates. Former North Carolina senator John Edwards was in Utah last month. While Barack Obama will be coming to Utah in August to attend a fundraiser in Park City.
Anderson and Corroon were lavish in their support to Richardson. Anderson said that the United States was going through troubled times and needed a strong leadership to deal with the problems the nation was facing. Anderson believes that Richardson is an able diplomat who has the required experience as he was the United Nations ambassador and Energy Secretary during when Bill Clinton was the president. The New Mexico governor is currently considered as a second-tier candidate. Richardson’s knack for diplomacy was clearly evident when he successfully negotiated release of hostages in North Korea, Sudan and Iraq.
Richardson believes that the American people will decide the president based on the candidate’s experience rather than anything else.
2008 will give an opportunity to the people of Utah to either agree with what Richardson has said or disagree.
