Fred Thompson’s Path May Not Be Easy

For the moment, Fred Thompson can breathe easily as he has not formally declared or file his candidacy. However, once the actor and the former Tennessee senator makes his announcement, the rivals will start looking for Thompson’s weak spots in his personal and political life.

Many believe that it will be difficult for Thompson to preserve his image once he jumps into the fray. Recently many stories have been published and scathing remarks have been made about his personal and professional life, and those are indicative enough of the extent of attacks his presidential campaign is likely to face in future.

Fred Thompson has an illustrious career, which is reflected by his numerous accomplishments. He had served the Senate from 1994 to 2003, during which he advocated for reforms in campaign funds legislation and chaired an investigation committee that looked into Chinese influence in the 1996 presidential election. Apart from this, he had also lobbied on various issues including a large pension fund. However, his rivals are likely to concentrate of various controversial issues that cropped up during his tenure as Senator. Some of the controversial clients that Thompson had include Jean Bertrand Aristide, the former Haitian President and Equitas Ltd, the British reinsurance company facing billions in claims from people harmed by asbestos.

There are certain other points that Thompson’s opposition could take advantage of. These include his stance on abortion, his support for President Bush on Iraq’s policy, his dating as a single man in Washington, his second marriage to a much younger woman and his support for Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

However, for the moment, Thompson is not worried about the attacks or the criticism. He is taking everything with a pinch of salt.
